Here is a rare memoir of life in Hooverville written by the man who was widely acknowledged as the unofficial mayor of Seattle's famous shacktown.

 

Written in 1938, it was published as an appendix to Calvin F. Shmid, Social Trends in Seattle (University of Washington Press, 1944).
