Site Onboarding Tasks

There are no additional onboarding tasks for UWMC – Montlake for UWSOM students. Some surgical teams see clinic patients at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). SCCA requires some onboarding paperwork which must be cleared by SCCA before students are allowed to be onsite. A representative from SCCA will reach out with next steps prior to the start of the clerkship. Please return the necessary paperwork to SCCA no less than 2 weeks prior to the start of the rotation.

If you completed a WWAMI track and this is your first time at UWMC during your medical school training, you will need to obtain a hospital badge from the badging office in BB120. The SOM has already provided the badging office with the necessary information for students to obtain a badge. You will also need a husky card for the rotation. Door access will be tied to your husky card. The department will request necessary access on your behalf prior to the start of the rotation.

Approximately one week before the start of your rotation, you will receive site orientation information which will include your starting team assignment and the contact information of the resident to contact to confirm where to meet your team in the afternoon of the first day of your clerkship.

Team Assignments

Each student will be assigned to rotate on two different teams during the six week clerkships. Team assignments will be sent out prior to the start of the rotation. There are six general surgery teams that students may be scheduled on:

Surgery EGS: Emergency General Surgery

Surgery BE: Breast and Endocrine

Surgery HPB: Hepatobiliary

Surgery UGI: Upper GI

Surgery CRS: Colorectal Surgery

Surgery MT: Mixed Tumor

Epic EMR Training

If you have not previously completed Epic EMR training through UW, you will need to complete assigned LMS training modules prior to the start of the rotation. You MUST complete this training to access Epic. Failure to complete the assigned training will prohibit your access to the EMR system used at UWMC. In addition to assigned LMS training modules, students need to complete the “On Demand” specialty training bundle for surgery – “Medical Student Surgery Rotation”. The “On Demand” bundles are not specifically assigned so you will need to search the LMS system to locate them. Once all trainings are complete, it can take 1-3 business days for your access to be updated. Outstanding Epic training modules, including the “On Demand” modules for surgery, can impact your access to the EHR system.
