Dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with autism through intervention, education, professional training, and research aimed at effective treatments, prevention, and cure.

UW Autism Center provides diagnostic evaluations and multi-disciplinary intervention services for children with autism spectrum disorders from infancy through adolescence, and a wide range of professional training opportunities. Our mission is to provide state-of-the-art clinical services, increase capacity for services through training, increase knowledge and awareness about autism in the professional community and general public, and conduct research aimed at improving the lives of individuals with autism and their families. The Autism Center is part of the Center on Human Development and Disability at the University of Washington and involves faculty and staff from the UW School of Medicine, Colleges of Arts and Sciences, and Education.

UW Autism Center involves scientists from several different disciplines who are working collaboratively to discover the cause of autism and develop effective treatments. The research program is part of a larger network of research projects in the United States which are funded by the National Institutes of Health called the Autism Centers of Excellence (ACE) and the STAART (Studies to Advance Autism Research and Treatment) Centers Program. We believe that collaboration among scientists is important to help us answer some of the essential questions facing individuals, families, and the larger autism community.

Our research efforts are focused on:
1. Early diagnosis of autism and related disorders;
2. Understanding the neurobiological basis of autism;
3. Understanding brain functioning, language, and cognitive development in autism;
4. Identifying early biological and behavioral predictors of outcome;
5. Identifying the genes related to autism; and
6. Developing and assessing behavioral and biological treatments for autism.

The Autism Center has opened a satellite site on the campus of the University of Washington in Tacoma. Through active collaboration and communication with professionals and parents in the region, the Tacoma site works to identify and provide needed clinical services and to plan efforts to serve as an autism resource for the broader Washington state community.
