Graduations

Andrew Lincowski
Graduated with a Dual-Title PhD in Astronomy and Astrobiology! Andrew is continuing his work at the UW with a postdoctoral position with Prof. Vikki Meadows and the Virtual Planetary Laboratory research group.

Owen Lehmer
Graduated with a Dual-Title PhD in Earth & Space Sciences and Astrobiology! Owen has been funded as a graduate student through the NASA Pathways program and will be moving on to a Civil Servant Research position in the SSX branch at NASA Ames

Jacob Lustig-Yaeger
Graduated with a Dual-Title PhD in Astronomy and Astrobiology! Jake has accepted a Postdoctoral fellowship with the Applied Physics Laboratory at John Hopkins University focusing on comparative planetology using exoplanet and solar system planetary science. Jake will also be working with the Dragonfly team on their mission to Saturn’s moon Titan.

Diana Windemuth
Graduated with a Dual-Title PhD in Astronomy and Astrobiology!

Max Showalter
Graduated with a Dual-Title PhD in Oceanography and Astrobiology! Max is continuing his work at the UW as a postdoc with Prof. Jody Deming until February 2021 when he will move to Washington DC for a 1 year appointment as a Knauss Marine Policy Fellow!

Meanwhile the rest of the members of the Astrobiology Program have been hard at work and several have been recognized for their efforts and impacts to the field

  • Max Showalter (Ocean) was recognized as a UW College of the Environment Graduate Dean’s Medalist!
  • Nicolas Cowan (PhD in ESS and Graduate Certificate, 2009) was awarded the 2019 Harvey B. Richer Gold Medal by the Canadian Astronomical Society and was appointed as the Canada Research Chair in Planetary Climate!
  • Prof. Sharon Doty (SEFS) was awarded the UW College of the Environment Exceptional Mentoring of Undergraduates Award!
  • Eliah Overbey (Genome) received a Student Investigator Spaceflight Award from the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS)!
  • Prof. Sarah Keller (Chem) was awarded the 2019 Cottrell STAR Award from the Research Corporation!
  • Jacob Lustig-Yaeger, Diana Windemuth, and Prof. Victoria Meadows, as well as other UWAB alumni and affiliates won a 2019 NASA Group Achievement Award for the LUVOIR mission concept!
  • Prof. David Catling (ESS) was awarded $1.2M from the Simons Foundation for continued work as an Investigator in the Simons Collaboration on the Origin of Life!
  • Yuk Chan Chun (Atmos) was awarded a NASA FINESST fellowship!
  • Addien Wray (ESS) was awarded the Peter Misch Fellowship in Earth & Space Sciences as well as an award for the Stephen G. Warren Endowed Fund for Graduate Students!
  • Andrew Shumway (ESS) was awarded the Howard A. and Liela Coombs Scholarship fund and the Howard A. and Leila Coombs Endowed Fellowship in Earth & Space Sciences!
  • Jana Meixnerova (ESS) was awarded the ESS Distinguished Scholar Fellowship!
