Prof. Robert Winglee (1958 – 2020)

The UW Astrobiology Program is saddened announce the sudden passing of Prof. Robert Winglee (ESS) on December 24, 2020. Prof. Winglee was a highly valued, long-time member of the UW Astrobiology Program and will be greatly missed.

Per the Earth and Space Sciences Department:

Robert held a PHD in physics from the University of Sydney (Australia) and served as the Chair of ESS from 2005 to 2015. Director of Washington Space Grant, and the founder and director of the Northwest Earth and Space Sciences Pipeline. He was recipient of the UW Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year in 2014, and was a NASA Innovation Fellow. He accomplished his dream of going into space when he launched a student-built and designed miniature satellite (CubeSat), which successfully transmitted data from orbit. Robert was a valued colleague and teacher.
