My study experience was quite long – several years, from 2007 to 2010. Miami is not “abroad” in the usual sense, but it is not easily categorized next to the rest of the United States. At over 75% Latin@ and as one of the most “foreign” cities in the world by population, Miami is something of a city-state unto itself; a glossy tax haven, a gritty refuge, the capital of South America.
In this work I attempt to convey the energy of my experience as a pressing-forward of time and events. No one moment, high or low, captures the flavor of this time period… it is the aggregate of moments that begins to speak with more assurance. Whether we are at home or away, time moves of its own accord and all we can do is grab hold for the ride.
“Dale” is a turn of phrase that may have only entered the American lexicon thanks to Pitbull, but it has been endemic to Miami and many other places since long before then. Yes. Go. Now’s your chance. Do it. Go on, now. Come on, hurry up! No time like the present.
