Isaan, Thailand

Isaan, Thailand Collage

The northeastern region of Thailand, or Isaan, is unlike anywhere else in the country. Known for its lush rice patties and simple lifestyle, the area serves as the national hub of traditional culture. By living with a family of organic rice farmers in a village of 200 people in the province of Yasothon, I grew more appreciative of the less tangible cultural heritage of the country I had been living in. I made connections with people who had never spoken with a foreigner before, I ate chicken that was caught and butchered before my eyes, and I napped on a bamboo table outside our one-roomed home everyday. This life rich with culture, food, community, and connectivity to one’s surroundings has made a lasting impression on me, which I tried to depict through this collage.
