About the Campaign

The purpose of #REPRESENT is to bring awareness to representation. Throughout this campaign, we discussed why it’s important to have representation in all systems and the repercussions of not having representation,

We hoped to engage the student community through our Instagram stories. We wanted to REPRESENT their voices and experiences in this campaign!

Each week of the campaign, we focused on a different topic.

Why Sesame Street Theme?

Sesame Street has been around for a while and is a show that students have some childhood connection to. It is a great show that has covered and challenged a wide range of social topics and has introduced many characters of different identities. We felt that because Sesame Street has paved a way for representation on children’s television, it would be a fitting theme for our #REPRESENT campaign.

Voter Suppression

According to Anti-Defamation League (ADL), “Voter suppression laws are used to impact the outcome of an election by discouraging or preventing specific groups of people from voting.” When people’s right to vote is suppressed, their voices are prevented from being represented and heard in local, state, and national decisions.

We decided to include voter suppression in our #REPRESENT campaign because voter suppression is a tactic used to suppress people’s voices and choices. We hoped to educate our student community about this issue and how to challenge voter suppression in their community.
