Disability Resources for Students

Classroom Relocation

Classroom Relocation is an accommodation to ensure students with disabilities can have equal access to the University’s physical campus classrooms to attend courses in which they are enrolled. A course may be reassigned to another room or building if a student with a disability has impacts related to their ability to physically transport themselves with enough time during the passing periods, or if the building or room the course is located in is physically inaccessible to them.

Student Responsibilities

  • Activate accommodation by checking the appropriate box in student myDRS profile per the services timeline OR as soon as possible once approved by the DRS Coordinator.
  • Use priority registration to select classes. Consider:
    • Distance between buildings
    • Time between classes (to travel or use Dial-A-Ride)
    • Dial-a-ride stop locations (if needed; map available on Dial-A-Ride website)
  • Review descriptions of assigned classrooms for accessibility.
  • Select accommodations through myDRS for each class, by checking one of the two options listed for each class:
    • Classroom Relocation (This room works for me, please keep it) — Check this if you feel your classrooms are accessible to you. DRS will then make sure that the UW Time Schedule office does not move the class(es).
    • Classroom Relocation (I am not sure if this room works for me, please check) — Check this if you are unsure of the accessibility of your classroom.
  • Discuss any concerns regarding this accommodation with assigned DRS Coordinator.

DRS Responsibilities

  • Upon receiving a request through myDRS, DRS staff will follow up with the student to get additional information/clarification and then submit needs to the Office of the Registrar (or relevant campus unit) to relocate inaccessible rooms or to make sure accessible ones are not moved.
  • Use classroom accessibility needs survey and classroom information on file to determine if relocation is needed. DRS will either request a relocation or request that your classroom not be relocated.

Seattle/Bothell Campus:

  • Office of the Registrar staff confirms if a relocation was possible to DRS Classroom Services staff.
  • Timely submission of requests is necessary as classroom relocations affect multiple departments and classrooms assignments.

Tacoma Campus:

  1. DRS staff contacts program/department Office Coordinator to schedule meeting to discuss classroom relocation, and CCs Office of Registrar’s Room Scheduler.
  2. DRS meets with Office Coordinator to discuss relocation and barriers.
  3. Office Coordinator works within department and faculty to swap classrooms. If unsuccessful within department, individual Office Coordinators need to contact other departmental Office Coordinators to initiate swap of classrooms.
  4. If departmental Office Coordinators are unsuccessful in facilitating an appropriate room swap, DRS will contact Office Coordinator and Department Dean to discuss need and finalize room relocation.
  5. Once class relocation has been finalized, DRS will contact the student to notify them of the new room assignment.
