Spring Faculty Spotlight featuring Sociology Professor Dr. Alexes Harris!
The UW Kelly ECC encourages students to join us for exclusive conversations with some of UW’s distinguished professors of color during our Faculty Spotlights at the Kelly ECC. This quarter, we are proud to feature Alexes Harris! Dr. Harris is a professor of sociology at the University of Washington and is the University of Washington Term Professor. Her research and teaching focuses on social stratification processes and racial ethnic disparities. Her recent research has investigated the sentencing practice of monetary sanctions, the fines, fees, surcharges, restitution and related payment costs imposed on people who make contact with systems of justice in the United States. Dr. Harris’ book, A Pound of Flesh: Monetary Sanctions as a Punishment for the Poor, (Russell Sage, 2016) has received national and local media attention from outlets like The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, NPR, The Atlantic, Mother Jones, Aljazeera, King5 News and The Seattle Times. We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Harris to the Kelly ECC and highlight her amazing work for Spring Faculty Spotlight! Food will be served at this event!
The Campus Food Pantry allows UW students, staff, and faculty to be supplied with nonperishable groceries and select fresh produce for no cost. Anyone with a Husky ID is eligible to receive support. The Pantry uses a pop-up model with locations in HUB 214 and the Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center, and runs once a month at each site. We also take drop-in appointments for those in need who cannot attend a pop-up.
