Social Justice: The Stories and History of ICWA @ Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center

The Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) is the gold standard for tribal policy that protects Native children by keeping them within their tribes during the adoption process. It has combated Indigenous erasure and genocide for years! Now in 2023, ICWA is at danger in Congress for being deemed unconstitutional. Come to this workshop to hear the stories and history of ICWA from Native members who have worked on and fought for ICWA to be enacted in Washington.

BIPOC Makers Fair @ Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center

Join us at the Kelly ECC as we host some amazing crafted items made by BIPOC students, staff, faculty and alumni at UW. We will be taking over the first floor of the center for you. There will be jewelry, designed prints and stickers, Custom shirts, soap, crystals, art, and so much more. We will also have a giveaways and raffles for the students that attend. The event will be on Thursday April 13 from 4-7pm.

This workshop is created to center strategies and dialogue to help leaders transition their leadership well. We at the ECC, want to see RSOs sustained and a huge component of that is sustaining leadership. Come to here the how to’s of passing off leadership roles to the next generation!

Community Bond Night is a quarterly bonding opportunity for affiliated RSO’s to connect with ECC staff and other affiliated RSO’s. Each quarter addresses different themes that are important to the growth, success and maintenance of an RSO.

To celebrate and honor the student leaders among the Kelly ECC community, the Gala, our community’s annual student leadership awards ceremony, a celebration that recognizes and pays tribute to student leaders and student organizations for their achievements and hard work throughout the academic school year, as well as recognizing our graduating seniors.

Come out to the Kelly ECC on Wednesday, May 24 to take a break from the stress of preparing for finals. Take some time to take care of yourself with relaxing activities and to fuel up for finals with free food and drinks, and a limited number of care packages, Drop by the Unity Suite anytime between 4pm and 6pm.

ECC Open House @ Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center

The ECC open house is an annual event where the ECC welcomes students back to campus through informing students about the various programs and resources available to them that the ECC provides. Students will also have the opportunity to explore our spaces to learn more about how they can best utilize these spaces during the academic year. This year the ECC will also be engaging with students virtually on our social media platforms to give students who may not be able to attend the Open House the opportunity to learn about our space and resources as well.

OMA&D Block Party @ Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center

The OMA&D Block Party is an annual tradition to kick-off the new academic year at the Kelly ECC.  This student-focused social event is geared towards new and returning students to engage and create community.

The OMA&D (Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity) kicks off the year of community engagement with a day of fun and energy. We will be partnering up with student organizations, on-campus resources, and community partners in celebrating the beginning of another year with a student-focused social. Highlights of the mixer will include giveaways, caricature artist, henna artist, a photobooth and much more.  We look forward to seeing you at the Kelly ECC!
