As I thought what I should write for a journal, I wanted to rethink about the clip that I watched in the class. The name of the clip was “Space Monkey-it’s not a planet, it’s our home”. As I watch this clip, I first thought that what is this, what is this telling, or what should I feel as I watch? I was lost but I could get a concept from the title of the clip. Also, the end of the clip impressed me in many ways. The change of monkey’s emotions through the clip and the music delivered different meanings such as lonely, sadness, and lost mind.

At the beginning, I thought the monkey has sent to space because the human wanted to show their innovation, and technologies. However, it conveyed the feeling that the monkey wants to see his family and wants to go home. In other words, the human were selfish and human-centered in the Earth by not caring the environment, animals, and other things. The end of the clip illustrates the going back to the Earth. The monkey’s face had little bit of smile when he was about the go in Earth’s atmosphere, but his face expressed only sadness when he arrived. I thought the end of the clip was to tell the disaster of the Earth by pollution since the monkey landed around the factories, not the forest which is real home for monkey. The background tone, grey, illustrated the smog of the air that no one could survive at that time. Also I was curious about why the monkey did not take off the spacesuit when he arrived on the Earth. When I go home, Korea, even though it is not like going out of the Earth, I breathe the air of my hometown. This makes me feel I am home. However, the monkey in the clip did not take off the spacesuit nor felt happy. This clip made me thought the importance of ecosystems like linkage between human and environment, between environment and animals, and between animals and human. All of these systems should be considered and the human should have responsibility to our own destruction.
