Circulating Biomarker Candidates of Inflammation in Alzheimer’s Disease
Presenter Lynn Bekris, PhD, Cleveland Clinic
Speaker Bio:
Dr. Bekris' goal is to identify biofluid biomarkers that will make it possible to track, treat and monitor early neurodegenerative processes with a particular focus on immunopathological processes. She currently uses biomedical approaches to demonstrate the feasibility of genetic, epigenetic and circulating proteins as potential biomarkers of neurodegenerative disease progression and therapeutic outcomes.
As a post-doctoral trainee in a neurogenetics and biomarkers research program at the University of Washington with mentors Jerry Schellenberg, Elaine Peskind and Chang-En Yu, she investigated the functional components of neurodegenerative disease related genes and their relationship with Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers and genetic variants.
As a new assistant professor at the University of Washington, under an NIH K99-R00 award, she focused on characterizing the association between biomarker expression and regulatory region genetic variants in Alzheimer’s disease.
To expand her research program, in 2014 Dr. Bekris moved her lab to the Cleveland Clinic Genomic Medicine Institute where she is now associate staff and associate professor. As Cleveland Clinic faculty she collaborated with Dr. James Leverenz to establish the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health – Biobank. This biobank rapidly expanded and provided the infrastructure for a NIH funded Cleveland Alzheimer's Disease Research Center for which Dr. Bekris is the lead of the Biomarker Core. She is also a co-investigator on several NIH grants that require neurodegenerative disease biomarker expertise, such as the Dementia with Lewy Body Consortium. She is a primary investigator on two NIH funded projects, a project funded by the Aging Mind foundation and another project funded by the Women's Alzheimer's Movement.
The major focus of her lab is biomarker discovery and characterization in Alzheimer's Disease as well as in Alzheimer's disease related neurodegenerative diseases, such as Dementia with Lewy bodies, Down Syndrome or traumatic brain injury.
