Welcome to the Klavins lab open-source mixture controlled turbidostat wiki. This website is still a work in progress. If you have any questions or want to build a turbidostat please feel free to email Chris Takahashi at cnt at uw dot edu. Feel free to visit the About page to get a general overview or the Construction Manual to see how it's built.

Our turbidostat was designed with the following features in mind:

  • Flexible: Our turbidostat incorporates mixture control and a simple python programming interface enabling a a vast array of uses from dynamical system characterization to accelerated directed evolution and synthetic circuit tuning.
  • Modular: Parts should be easily interchangeable for modified and or improved parts. This allows for upgrades in performance and functionality without needing to rebuild an entire system.
  • Multiplex: Our eight vessel multiplex design allows experiment to be conducted with controls and replicates.
  • Inexpensive: There are commercial bioreactors available but they are all orders of magnitude more expensive geared toward things other than what a modern systems or synthetic biologist's needs.
  • Open-source: All designs and software are open source and community members are encouraged to modify the designs and software and submit improvements and changes. The complete license is available here.
