Decade-long research study reveals a new genetic target for fighting Alzheimer’s and FTD pathology

In the wake of disappointments over clinical trials targeting amyloid plaques in Alzheimer’s disease, researchers are focusing more attention on misfolded tau protein, another culprit in brain diseases that cause dementia. Ancestry-specific genetic variation at APOE Alzheimer’s gene modifies disease risk

In a new study of more than 3,000 Caribbean Hispanics, ADRC researchers found that individuals with African ancestry at a key Alzheimer’s genetic risk factor had 39 percent lower odds of developing Alzheimer’s disease than individuals with European ancestry at the gene.
