Professors Gelb and Turecek received the 2013 Gustavus John Esselen Award for Chemistry in the Public Interest for their work developing practical and reliable screening methodologies for the early detection of genetic diseases in newborns.

Werner Kaminsky, Research Associate Professor and Department Crystallographer, working with researchers at KinDex Therapeutics and the University of Washington, has recently determined the absolute configurations of the acids from hops that give beer its characteristic bitter flavor.
