I happened to come across data set names that contain special characters such as “:” or “%”.  Although there is no rigid restriction that only ‘alphanumerics’ can be used in dataset names,  the use of special characters such as these are highly discouraged.  The underlying operating system most often interprets these characters in a special way and this can lead to your dataset and raw data being copied to wrong locations.

Topspin has a ‘Title’ tab into which details of sample, experiment, etc. can be entered, in a free format. This file is stored along with your raw data.  This is the preferred place to put exhaustive details rather than in the dataset title.
