PREPARING FOR 500 MHz INSTRUMENT UPGRADES

Dear Users

Recently, some of you might have seen a Post in this space about oncoming instrument Upgrades in the 500 MHz category.  Here is a link to that roadmap, in case you missed it.

To summarize :

Beginning of the New Year 2023

  • We will be left with two modern 500 MHz spectrometers : GG500 AND NEO500
  • The venerable AV500 will be retired.
  • GG500:
    • This instrument will physically move and replace the AV500 electronics console (the magnet will remain in place)
    • We will also be getting a shiny new BBFO probe with ATMA capability that will be part of this relocated GG500 instrument.
    • BBFO : Capable of observing 1H, X-broad band and 19F with one probehead.
    • We also hope that an automatic Sample Injection accessory, SampleMail will be available with this instrument – this will relieve us from climbing atop the stepladder to inject and eject samples.
  • NEO500:
    • This will be the latest model NMR console in the facility. (Here is a link to the manufacturer’s webpage, in case you are technically inclined)
    • This instrument will host the Prodigy Cryoprobe (here is a link to the summary page).  This probe is also a BBFO type probe that will cover pretty much all the nuclei that we are in need of observing.
    • The sensitivity of this probe is 2x to 3x better than a similar Room Temperature probe :  this leads to a reduction in NMR experiment time by a factor of 4 to 9 !
    • This instrument will be equipped with a SampleCase Automatic Sample Changer with space for 24 NMR sample tubes.  Sample Injection and Ejection will be controlled by the software. (A quick glance here at what the unit is capable of)
    • VT :  The probe has a comfortable temperature range of -40 C to +120 C for prolonged operation. (we can reach higher temperatures with careful precautions taken on the duration of experiments)

In preparation….

  • Next week, both the GG500 and AV500 instruments will be offline for about  a day and a half for us to do the needed hardware reconfiguration in these consoles.
  • After this operation, the AV500 console will host the TBI-1H{13C,X} probe
  • The GG500 console will host the TXO-1H{19F, 13C} probe.
  • Please note that this configuration swap will be a short-lived one – until the new NEO500 NMR spectrometer shows up by the end of December at our facility.

More communication will be upcoming on this exciting phase of the NMR facility. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

Thank you for your time.
