ALERT ! NEO500 – RENEWED CLARION CALL FOR SAMPLE TUBE DISCIPLINE

Dear Users

First of, I will invite you to go through an older post that was made on 23 June, 2023 on the subject of responsibly handling your Sample Tubes. (The fact that I am quoting such an old post means that, we haven’t quite achieved compliance with the directives in that post.)

Please click on the post link and take a moment to read it fully

As mentioned there,  the policy with used Sample Tubes can be simply summarized as :

  • NEO500 :  At or after 12 pm of every Friday, the buffer rack of 72 tubes capacity with any unclaimed sample tubes will be removed
  • Other instruments : At or after 12 pm of every Friday,  any unclaimed tubes in the respective sample holding racks of each instrument will be removed
  • The collected sample tubes will be added to a pool in a storage location and based on Staff schedule,  they will be offered to users to take and reuse as they please, later.
  • As of now, the location to collect these free tubes will be the bench next to the NMR printer and workstation as you enter Bagley 37, NMR lab.

No matter  how big the sample tube capacity of the robot is in NMR systems,  it is pretty easy to clog up the whole system if we do not pay attention to the simple housekeeping habit of claiming your own samples tubes as soon as your experiment is done.

Let me add that, this does not require evolving anything new on your part.  For all instruments except NEO500,

  • (i) walk-on times are restricted to 60 minutes and
  • (ii) we have been collecting our sample tubes immediately after our time slot ends.

The same modus operandi should keep the NEO500 queue healthy and free flowing.  By the same token, long block i.e. night and weekend experiments will need only a few holders in the Carousel and the 24 slots should be sufficient to address that as well.

Let’s help ourselves by helping one another.
